FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Coach Salo was recently appointed Head Coach of the University of Southern California - How will the Salo Swim Camp be different?
The Salo Swim Camps will be offered at both Soka University (June 24-29) as well as the University of Southern California (June 10-July 6 - four sessions). The Salo Swim Camps at USC replace the successful camps offered by USA National Team Coach, Mark Schubert who has moved on to Colorado Springs where he is now in charge of the USA Olympic Team.

  • Several girls on the same team are coming to the camp - can they room together?
Campers are assigned two campers per room which consist of two beds. If a camper has indicated a roommate preference, every effort will be made to accomodate that request.

  • How are rooms assigned?
Room assignments will be made by age group. Ten and unders, pre-high school aged, and high school aged swimmers will generally be roomed together in the same dorm floor. Boys and girls will be roomed in seperate areas of the dorm floor with supervising counselors (1:10) assigned to rooms in the direct vicinity of the campers.

  • How many camp counselors will be at the camp?
The Salo Swim Camps will employ COACH COUNSELORS as well as ATHLETE COUNSELORS along with Coach Dave Salo and Camp Coordinator Adam Crossen along with his USC coaching staff. In addition, The Camp will have Celebrity Guests including Lenny Krayzelburg, Jason Lezak, David Denniston and possibly others in attendance. At all times, the camper to counselor ratio will not exceed 12:1.

  • What is the difference between a Coach Counselor and an Athlete Counselor?
A Coach Counselor is a USA-Swimming Registered Professional Swimming Coach who will work with the campers during each training session and will be providing supervision of the campers 24/7. The Coach Counselor works with the campers from the deck. The Athlete Counselor is a collegiate swimmer, that will work with the athletes in the water providing demonstrations of skills that are important to the development of each camper's skills.

  • Can I sign up for more than one session?
A camper can attend any number of sessions offered. There will be an additional charge of $100 per day ($200 total for Friday and Saturday night) if a camper will be staying in the dorms between successive camps.

  • Can my child come to the camp for just the day's activities and come home at night?
The Camp offers the option to participate as a Day Camper or Resident Camper. A Day Camper checks in for each day's activities (except the first day) at 8:30 am and then is available for pickup at 7:30 pm (except last day at 12:30pm). The Day Camp program is excellent for those campers that live close to the camp, or if they are in the area with the family for a vacation. While Mom and Dad or out playing golf or taking in some local shopping, the kids are at the Salo Swim Camps for the day. Day campers will participate in all the same activities as the resident camper. The resident camper will stay on campus in dorm housing with 24/7 supervision.

  • If my child is registered as a Day Camper, are meals provided?
The Day Camp program is offered from 8:30am to 7:30pm. Day Campers will be provided Lunch and Dinner as well as afternoon snacks.

  • I want to enroll my child in your camp, are parents allowed to observe the camp from the stands?
Parents are allowed to watch the water sessions from the spectator seating area. Parents are also invited to some of the classroom sessions where our celebrity guests (Lenny Krayzelburg, Jason Lesak, Staciana Winfielf, or David Denniston) will be meeting with the campers.

  • I have a nine year old that is interested in attending the camp - is this camp appropriate for that age group?
The Salo Swim Camps are open to swimmers that are nine years of age and older. We recommend that swimmers have B time standards as a minimum. We also recommend the Day Camp program for those campers that are ten and under, as this age group may be a bit young for dorm experience. If you are thinking of having your nine year old attend the camp, we encourage them to come with a friend if they will be housed in the dorms as a Resident Camper.

  • We live outside of the United States, is your camp open to international swimmers as well?
International swimmers are invited and encouraged to attend the Salo Swim Camps. International campers will need to apply early to the appropriate governmental agencies within their country for visas, etc.

  • With campers attending of different ability levels and between 9 and 18 years of age, how will they be grouped?
The campers will be grouped according to age and skill level and assigned a Coach-Counselor and an Athlete-Counselor to work with them specifically during the camp session along with Coach Salo and his staff. In this way the water sessions will be geared towards the level of each group.

  • How are the sessions different for a camper that stays for more than one session?
Campers that stay for more than one session will experience a progression in the "training" program as well as the drills that are an important part of the camp. In addition, each week, one of our celebrity guests will be in attendance to talk to the campers about swimming and the skills needed to do the best they can. Also, campers that stay over will experience a concentrated Starts & Turns Session on Saturday.

  • I want to know if the camp is appropriate for my child - is my child fast enough?
The Salo Swim Camps are appropriate for all children that have experience swimming on a swim team. As a guideline you can visit USA Swimming's web site and look at the times for your child's age group which correspond to the "B"times. This is the minimum time to participate in the camp.

  • My child is considered to be one of the best in his age group (13 and older) - will the camp be challenging enough?
The Salo Swim Camps at the University of Southern California offer an opportunity for those able to train with the elite Trojan Swim Club during the morning sessions. The Trojan Swim Club consists of university athletes that compete at the National and Olympic Trials level of performance.

  • I am 16 years old and I am looking for camp where I will get the training I need to prepare for this summer's big meets - can your camp provide the training I need?
Coach Salo is recognized as among the most successful coaches the past two decades. To his credit Coach Salo has been recognized by USA Swimming as Coach of the Year (2002) and has been finalist for the prestigious ASCA Coach of the Year honors on several occassions. Coach Salo has coached swimmers to USA National Championship titles, Pan Pacific, Pan Am and Olympic Championship titles, in every stroke and nearly every event. The camp will provide for those swimmers who need a lot of stroke development, while also providing an outstanding environment for those training for major meets for the summer. Coach Salo and his staff will ensure that swimmers that are interested in a challenging training environment will be provided for.

  • What is the refund and cancellation policy?
Cancellations prior to May 1 - all fees other than the $100 deposit are refundable and the deposit may be applied to future camps.
Cancellations after May 1 - all fees are refundable except for the $100 deposit which may NOT be applied to future camps. All cancellations must be submitted in written form (email or standard mail).

  • What time is checkin and what time is checkout?
Checkin for the first day of camp (Sunday) is between 3:00-4:00pm for resident campers and 3:30-4:00pm for day campers. Campers arriving via air should schedule arrivals prior to 2:00pm on Checkin day (Sunday). Day campers are required to checkin each day by 8:30am at the pool and checkout from the pool is 7:30pm each day of camp, except the final day which is 12:30pm. Checkout at the conclusion of the camp for resident campers is 12:30pm (Friday). Airport departures should be scheduled for 2-4pm on Friday.

  • With a minimum of eight registered swimmers from the same team, we offer room and board for one accompanying coach. The accompanying coach will be rewarded with an opportunity to work with Coach Salo during the camp.
